When it comes to cleaning the risers of any make or model of escalator, the toughest challenge is to find the right machine for the job, since most of the escalator cleaners on the market today only clean the treads and not the risers. The next toughest challenge is to find the right detergent.

Eureka’s ERC45 (ERC stands for Eureka Riser Cleaner) is specially designed for cleaning escalator risers. While our R&D department were developing this machine, Eureka also decided to perfect a special detergent called YESTEP to satisfy market demand for a dedicated cleaning product with optimal characteristics.

Escalators are complex pieces of equipment in the form of a chain of steps that move in a continuous cycle in which they are exposed to view and open to use during the outward journey and hidden within the drive compartment on the return journey. The dirt that builds up in the groove patterns of steps can be extremely varied, ranging from spilt food and liquids to mud and dust and even residues of the mineral oil used to lubricate the escalator’s drive gears.

A good detergent for escalator risers must therefore have all the following qualities:

Efficacy in cleaning various types of dirt
Respect for the materials from which the steps are made (generally aluminium or ferrous/painted materials)
A density that allows it to be sprayed easily onto vertical surfaces without running.

This last characteristic is particularly important as an excessively liquid product can run off the surface before it can perform its cleaning function. There is also a risk of it dripping down between the steps, eventually compromising the proper functioning of the escalator.
